BATTLE OF SKIPPERS IN WOMEN'S EMERGING ASIA CUP FINAL

The opportunities for women in cricket has increased by many folds in recent times and the finals of Emerging Asia Cup on Tuesday at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo provides them yet another chance to showcase their skills. Unbeaten India will take on hosts Sri Lanka in the four nation tournament final conducted by the Asian Cricket Council.

Sat 26-Oct: India v Sri Lanka at RPICS

Women's cricket is established in nations like England, Australia and New Zealand and the Asian bloc is quietly getting there thanks to the untiring efforts of the Asian Cricket Council. The International Cricket Council has seen the need to invest on women's cricket as well and as a result will be conducting the inaugural Under-19 World Cup in 2021.

Opportunities for women in the Big Bash League in Australia are many and there is talk of an IPL style event in India as well. These are signs that women's cricket will become professional soon.

India have proved that they are too strong and cruised to wins in both their group games. Sri Lanka's progress has been a struggle. They lost their opening game against India but bounced back to beat Bangladesh. They had to not only beat Bangladesh but reach the target in 35 overs. This they did in style and have got momentum behind them.

The captains of both teams have done well for their respective sides. Pune born Devika Vaidya is yet to be dismissed in the tournament having posted scores of 43 and 12 not out. Her leg-spin fetched four wickets in the high pressure game against Pakistan.

Sri Lanka skipper Harshitha Samarawickrama is a star in the making. She has posted two half-centuries in two games. The 21-year-old all-rounder has already represented the senior side in 13 ODIs and Sri Lanka will be looking to her to create an upset in the finals.

Inclement weather washed out several first round games and the organizers were sensible to reschedule the competition and push the final back by two days. An exciting final is on the cards and it remains to be seen whether India will continue their dominance or Sri Lanka will create a major upset.
