SRI LANKA THROUGH TO FINALS AFTER STUNNING WIN

Sri Lanka put up a sensational effort in their last group game of the Women's Emerging Asia Cup tournament against Bangladesh at R. Premadasa on Sunday to book a berth in the finals against India.

The game between the hosts and Bangladesh was effectively a semi-final. A win would have seen Bangladesh through to Tuesday's final but Sri Lanka had to win with a superior Net Run Rate to pip Bangladesh out of contention.

Sri Lanka were chasing a target of 128 but in order to qualify for the finals, they had to reach the target in 35 overs. They put up a super display to win with a healthier Net Run Rate with eight deliveries and four wickets to spare.

Skipper Harshitha Samarawickrama continued her good form scoring back to back half-centuries.

Batting at number three, she posted 53 that came off 83 deliveries with eight boundaries.

When she was dismissed offering a return catch to Nahida Akter in the 31st over, the game was still in the balance as Sri Lanka required 26 runs. They nearly blew it, losing three wickets for the addition of seven runs. But Athya Sandeepani (12) and Kaveesha Welikonthage (9) were involved in an unfinished 19 run stand for the seventh wicket to see Sri Lanka through. It turned out to be a thrilling run chase but Bangladesh could have made it count with a better effort on the field.

Sri Lanka's fielding, meanwhile, was superb. They were well led by Samarawickrama about whom the fans will hear a lot more in the future.

Nahida was impressive for Bangladesh finishing with three wickets.

Bangladesh elected to bat first after winning the toss and although several of their batters got starts no one was able to go onto make a big contribution. Sobhana Mostary top scored with 29 runs.

Kaveesha Welikonthage picked up three wickets for Sri Lanka and she was well backed up by Athya Sandeepani and Umesha Thimeshani, who shared four wickets between the two of them.
