SF2: BANGLADESH BEAT AFGHANISTAN BY SEVEN WICKETS TO REACH THE FINAL

Darwish Rasooli’s century went in vain as Bangladesh registered a comfortable seven-wicket win over Afghanistan to reach the final of the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Thursday.

Bangladesh reached the modest target of 229 runs set by Afghanistan, thanks to half-centuries from opener Soumya Sarkar and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, with 61 balls to spare.

The home side lost the wicket of the other opener, Mohammad Naim, for 17 but man of the match Soumya and Najmul then added 107 runs for the second wicket to pay the platform for the easy win.

Soumya was dismissed for a team high of 61 off 59 balls, his innings featuring three fours and three sixes, while Najmul departed after scoring 59 off 68 balls.

It was then left to Yasir Ali and Afif Hossain to guide the run-chase with an unbroken 75-run fourth-wicket stand. The home side will take on Pakistan in the final at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday and both the teams will be looking to seal their maiden Emerging Teams Asia Cup title.

Earlier, it was Rasooli who fought a lone battle for Afghanistan after his side were sent in to bat first. The Afghans kept losing wickets right from the start and were struggling at 36 for four inside 12 overs.

But Rasooli took responsibility from one end and kept the scoreboard ticking, in the process registering his hundred. He was, however, dismissed for 114 off 128 balls, which featured seven fours and an equal number of sixes. Wahidullah Shafaq and Tariq Stanikzai scored 30s in the end to help Afghanistan post 228 for nine in 50 overs.

Medium pacers Hasan Mahmud and Soumya picked up three wickets each while left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam took two wickets for Bangladesh.
