Day 1: OMAN STUN SRI LANKA

Oman staged the first upset of the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, beating defending champions Sri Lanka by four wickets, thanks to a brilliant unbeaten hundred from opener Jatinder Singh, at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium Academy ground in Cox’s Bazar on Thursday.

Chasing a challenging target of 269 runs, it was Jatinder who stood firm for Oman and guided the side to the victory target with seven balls to spare.

Oman were earlier in a spot of bother when they lost four wickets for 90 runs, but a 148-run fifth-wicket stand between Jatinder and Suraj Kumar changed the course of the game for the associate nation.

Even though Suraj was dismissed for 70 off 77 balls, his innings featuring three sixes and four fours, Jatinder went on to reach his hundred and remained unbeaten on 131 off 150 deliveries, striking 13 fours and a six along the way.

Sri Lanka’s left-arm spinner Amila Aponso was the most successful of the bowlers with three wickets.

Earlier, Oman asked Sri Lanka to bat first and managed to skittle the defending champions for 268. Ashen Bandara top-scored with 61 while skipper Charith Asalanka added 57 runs. Off-spinner Mohammad Sanuth picked up three wickets while Jay Odedra took two wickets for Oman.
