Asian Games 2010 - Report Day 14: FINAL - AFGHANISTAN v BANGLADESH

  • Asian Games Men's Cricket Final: Afghanistan v Bangladesh
Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat
  • Team News: Afghanistan have replaced fast-bowler Shahpour Zadran with right arm pace man Aftab Alam, otherwise they're unchanged from the XI which beat Pakistan yesterday
  • Bangladesh are unchanged, already having what they feel to be the best mix of their bits and pieces utility players which got them to this Asian Games final
  • Gold at this year's Asian Games, on this, the penultimate day of competition, will be the first for either country in their history at this event
  • Nazmul Hossain RFM from the Pavilion End to Karim Sadiq RHB...
  • Karim, after playing and missing at the first two, outside off, gets off the mark with a cut to point, didn't quite time it
  • WICKET Shahzad goes first ball, to one that seamed away, his feet together and Mithun takes the edge behind the stumps, Afghanistan 1 for 1 after 4 balls
  • Mirwais Ashraf RHB in, run out yesterday against Pakistan without having an impact, an impact player for sure
  • Nazmul getting the ball to move both ways off the seam, raps Mirwais on the pads. Big appeal, not out. Ends the over with an off-cutter. Good bowling
  • Afghanistan 1 for 1 after 1 over, and Nazmul who hasn't really bowled too well so far this event, coming good at the right time
  • Big Shahadat Hossain RFM, Test and ODI player, to start from the Press Box End
  • It's expected by all to be a very even match
  • Both teams have impressed with the ball so far this tournament, more than with the bat. Afghanistan's bowlers yesterday, getting them to that famous 22-run victory over Pakistan and Bangladesh's bowlers restricting Sri Lanka to just 101
  • FOUR Mirwais off-drive, fielder no chance, Afghanistan 8 for 1 after 2 overs
  • Karim's tendency to walk and play is making life very interesting for the Bangladeshi bowlers, Nazmul beats him outside off again at the start of the third over
  • SIX But it's Nazmul with hands on hips as Karim climbs into a lofted off-drive that goes miles beyond the boundary, Afghanistan 16 for 1 in the third
  • SIX 22 for 1 next ball, Karim lofts a slower ball, like a golfer, over midwicket
  • BOUNCER by Nazmul to end the over, and Afghanistan are 22 for 1 after 3 overs
  • Nasir OB to bowl from the Press Box End
  • WICKET With his first ball, Mirwais caught and bowled. It's a slow wicket, he goes for 6 off 6 and Afghanistan are 22 for 2 after 3.1 overs
  • Nawroz Mangal RHB in - a very good player of spin, who's repertoire of strokes against them has increased in the past couple of months
  • Karim charges Nasir and is DROPPED by the diving Naeem Islam at mid-on, Afghanistan 24 for 2 after 4 overs
  • Spin from both ends now as Naeem Islam OB comes on
  • "Just one ball" says Ashraful to his team
  • MAIDEN by Naeem and they are as valuable as wickets in T20
  • Bangladesh bowling well, but Nawroz and Karim are also batting well and Afghanistan after 6 overs are 32 for 2
  • SLA Foysal Decans to come on from the Pavilion End
  • Decans getting some bite off the pitch too, albeit slow turn
  • Nawroz playing the spinners better than Karim at the moment, Afghanistan 34 for 2 after 7 overs, Karim 19* off 28, Nawroz 8* off 9
  • WICKET Karim sweeps and is well caught by Nazmul Hossain, running and diving forward at square leg and Afghanistan are 37 for 3 in the eigth over.
  • Naeem the wicket-taker for BAngladesh, Asghar Stanikzai RHB the new batsman
  • SIX Asghar 'best batsman' off the mark with a drive over long-on, Shuvo makes a great attempt to catch it but is over the ropes when he does so
  • Afghnaistan 47 for 3 after 9 overs
  • WICKET Decans takes a one-handed catch running behind him at mid-on and Nawroz goes, for 14 off 15 and Afghanistan are 49 for 4 with 2 balls to go of the 10th over
  • Two top one-handed catches by Bangladesh's infielders in two days. Catches win matches
  • Afghanistan's captain Mohammad Nabi RHB the new man, Afghanistan 51 for 4 after 10
  • Yesterday 125 was enough for them as they beat Pakistan by 22 runs, they'l want at least that today because Bangladesh have a better side than Pakistan here
  • There was mid-innings acceleration for Afghanistan provided by Asghar and Shabbir Noori yesterday, Nabi's come ahead of Shabbir today
  • Decans SLA is bowling well, but singles are coming
  • Bangladesh fielding well
  • 11 overs gone, Afghanistan 55 for 4
  • At this rate, they're on course for 100
  • Suhrawadi Shuvo SLA on from the Press Box End. 7 for 21 off 8 overs this tournament so far.
  • What works on this spinners' wicket is change of pace, so far this tournament only Bangladesh's Shuvo has shown that for them. Afghanistan's Nabi, Karim and Shinwari have shown that for the opposition
  • What works for Nabi is a simple timing and he clears the roof of the Press Box stand with ease, HUGE SIX, Shuvo can't believe it. Afghansitan 63 for 4 in the 12th
  • Another ball is being used now
  • Nabi sterals a single to end the Shuvo over and Afghanistan are 64 for 4 after 12 overs, Asghar 13* off 12, Nabi 11* off 8
  • WICKET Change of pace has worked for Bangladesh, Shahadat RFM comes on from the Pavilion End, short ball, Nabi early on the pull and hits the ball to mid-on out for 11 off 9 and Afghanistan are 64 for 5 at the start of the 13th over
  • Sami Shenwari RHB the new man, the explosiveness of Shabbir Noori being held back
  • WICKET Sami gloves Shahadat down leg and after a longish pause Umpire Sarika gives him out, Sami goes for 1 off 3, Afghanistan 66 for 6 after 13 overs
  • Shabbir Noori called 'Lara' by his team-mates, even though he's a right-hander, now in. 36 42 balls to have an impact
  • 100 looking a good score now but Afghanistan will want to get as close to 120 as possible
  • 14 overs gone, Afghanistan 69 for 6
  • Asghar 16* off 16, two wickets for Shahadat Hossain
  • Ashraful has captained well, brought Shahadat's pace on the moment that Nabi and Asghar were looking comfortable against the spinners
  • Shabbir survives a mistimed pull to collect a single to no man's land, Afghanistan 71 for 6 with 32 balls to go
  • Shabbir survives another miscue, this one going over the keeper's head off an attempted pull off Shahadat for FOUR, Afghanistan 76 for 6 after 15 overs
  • Bangladesh bowling to their field, run-routes policed. Afghanistan 78 for 6 off 16 overs and no boundary of authorith since Nabi's five overs ago
  • Nazmul Hossain 2-0-15-1 to come on from the Pavilon End
  • SIX Authoritative swing over long-on by Shabbir greets Nazmul
  • FOUR Next ball, througjh midwicket
  • Single next ball, brings Asghar on strike, Afghanistan 89 for 6 with 21 balls to go
  • Shabbir back on strike, FOUR, 16 off the over and Afghanistan are 94 for 6 off 17 overs
  • Asghar 20* off 20*, Shabbir 22*
  • Shabbir's day maybe, he miscues another one that falls safe in Shuvo's over
  • Asgahr 21* off 28, Shabbir 24* off 16. Afghanistan 98 for 6 with 2 overs to go
  • Shabbir's bootlaces very kindly being tightened by Shahadat Hossain
  • WICKET Ashraful strikes with his leggies, having Shabbir caught at long-on, Shabbir out for 25 off 19, good innings by him but disappointed in getting out, Afghanistan 100 for 7 with eight balls to go
  • Shafiqullah Shafaq RHB the new batsman
  • WICKET Shafiq holes out to midwicket five yards in, for 0 off 1 and Afghanistan are 102 for 8 with the last over coming up
  • Whatever they score it's going to be very very tight when Bangladesh chase
  • Shahadat 3-0-16-2, so far to bowl the last
  • FOUR Asghar the audacious, flicks to leg
  • FOUR And again, even better this time. Shahadat can't believe it
  • FOUR In front of the wicket this time, a short-arm pull off the front-foot to mid-off
  • A cheeky two off the last, and Asghar finishes on 38* off 36 and Afghanistan finish on 118 for 8 , 16 off the last over, all to Asghar 'best batsman'
  • Absolutely 50-50 this game now
  • Afghanistan have bowling riches, Bangladesh have batting talent - one of these will be converted into gold
  • Umpires Sarika Prasad and Buddhi Pradhan walking out to the middle for the Bangladesh innings
  • Mohammad nabi leads out his Afghanistan team
  • Bangladesh's Mithun Ali and Nazimuddin to open
  • Aftab Alam RFM to start from the Pavilion End
  • Biggest match of his young life so far
  • Bangladesh need 119 to win
  • Good pace from the young man, beats both batsman on the outside of the bat, and coming off the wicket quickly, Bangladesh 3 for 0 after 1 over
  • Mirwais Ashraf RMF to bowl from the Press Box End
  • CHANCE Mirwais drops Mithun in his follow-through
  • FOUR Nazimuddin straight drives sweetly to long-on
  • BIG APPEAL for lbw next ball, not out
  • After 2 overs Bangladesh are 10 for 0, another 109 wanted off 18 overs
  • FOUR through midwicket by Nazimuddin off Aftab, not perfectly timed
  • Aftab causing the batsmen problems, gets one to cut through Nazim next ball
  • Aftab's brother Hasti Gul who similarly opened the bowling for Afghanistan when he was playing, would be proud of him
  • Thre overs gone, Bangladesh 15 for 0. Another 104 wanted off 17 overs at just over 6 an over
  • Apologies, Bangladesh are 17 for 0 after 3 overs
  • WICKET Mirwais gets one to climb on Nazim and Sami takes the steepler at mid-off, Nazim out for 5 off 10, Bangladesh 17 for 1 after 3.3 overs
  • FOUR Mithun to third man, streakily, next ball
  • Four overs gone, Bangladesh 22 for 1. 97 wanted off 16 at still, just over 6 an over
  • FOUR Naeem Islam off the mark in style, cut down to third man off Aftab
  • Plenty of support for Bangladesh in Guangzhou today
  • Another good, pressing over from Aftab, Bangladesh 26 for 1 after 5 overs. Need 93 off the next 15 at 6.2 an over
  • Mirwais bowling a good over so far, just 1 off 4 balls
  • Naeem Islam, for all his talent, and efforts, not able to lay bat on ball. Just 1 off the over and Bangladesh are 27 for 1 after 6, needing 92 off 14 overs
  • Sami Shenwari LB to come on from the Pavilion End in place of Aftab Alam
  • HALF-CHANCE to Karim at short mid-off, hit hard by Mithun, looked like it just bounced in front of him
  • Nawroz Mangal at deep backward point and Hamid at square leg the men on the boundary
  • Seven overs gone, Bangladesh 30 for 1, needing 89 off 13 at something close to 7 an over. And the RRR starts to climb
  • Nabi OB from the Press Box End
  • SIX Full-toss helped over midwicket with ease by Mithun
  • BIG APPEAL for a caught behind off the inside edge as Naeem sweeps, not out
  • WICKET Mirwais at short fine-leg, what a fielder, throws while in mid-air and Mithun is out by an inch at the 'keeper's end as Naeem calls him through
  • Bangladesh 41 for 2 after that 11-run, 1-wicket over
  • Ashraful RHB (as if you didn't know) the new batsman
  • Nabi OB to continue
  • Sami LB back on rather
  • Sami bowled a game-changing maiden in the semi-final against Pakistan yesterday
  • Nine overs gone, Bangladesh 45 for 2, needing another 74 off 11 at just under 7 an over
  • SIX off Nabi's first ball of the over again, Naeem again, over midwicket again, two men in the deep notwithstanding
  • 10 overs gone, 10 to go. Bangladesh 52 for 2, needing 67 more. Afghanistan had been 51 for 4 at this stage
  • Naeem hits the leg-spin to mid-off for a one-bounce FOUR off Sami's first ball of the 11th over, two fielders beaten. Naeem playing with absolute confidence in himself
  • Shahzad tries a stumping, Ashraful just laughs and wonders why he would even think of knocking down the stumps with his back leg planted
  • FOUR Ashraful's first - through cover off Sami and Bangladesh are 63 for 2 after 11 overs, needing 56 off nine at just over 6.2 an over
  • Hamid Hassan RMF on from the Press Box End - another potential game-changer
  • He has bowled brilliantly this year all around the world and particularly impressed during the T20 World Cup
  • Just the one run from the Hamid over as he bowled a few eye-blinkers past the batsmen, Bangladesh 64 for 2 after 12, needing another 55 off 8 at just under 7 an over
  • Karim Sadiq OB on from the Pavilion End
  • WICKET Golden-arm strikes with his second delivery, Ashraful misreads a top-spinner and has off-stump knocked back, he's out for 10 off 15 and Bangladesh are 65 for 2 with 46 balls to go and 54 wanted
  • Bangladesh 65 for 3
  • Foysal Decans LHB the new bat - fiery character, fiery batsman
  • Naeem Islam 22* off 28 the key here, Bangladesh 69 for 3 after 13 overs, 49 wanted off 7
  • Just half an hour and we'll know who will win the Asian Games gold medal
  • Hamid Hassan RMF to bowl his second over, just one run from the last. Two on the boundary in front of square on the leg-side, one at mid-off on the boundary, one at deep backward point.
  • The Afghan flag headband is back on, though the flags on the cheek have gone
  • WICKET He strikes neverthess, beating Decans with pure pace! Bowled! And Bangladesh are 71 for 4 in the 14th
  • Just two off the over as Hamid has the batsmen late on every stroke. Bangladesh 71 for 4 after 14 overs, need 48 off 6 at 8 an over
  • The 1500 fans here at the stadium quiet, the game in the balance. New batsman is Shuva Chowdhury and he's with Naeem who's on 22* still
  • Karim for another over from the Pavilion End. The kind of skiddy, change of pace bowler that's so effective on this wicket
  • WICKET Golden arm does it again, Shafiq pouches Shuva Chowdhury at midwicket, for 1 off 5 and Bangladesh are 75 for 5 in the 15th
  • Afghanistan's fielders are doing all they can to support their bowlers
  • Naeem Islam still there 25* off 32 for Bangladesh, 76 for 5 with five overs to go and 43 wanted at 8.6 an over
  • After Hamid's 2 overs for 3 runs, Aftab 3-0-12-0 comes on from the Press Box End
  • It is building up to a nerve-wracking finish for us here and all you fans around the world isn't it?
  • Great effort by Shafiq running back at square leg to catch Shabbir Rahaman, six off the over, Bangladesh 82 for 5 with 4 overs to go and 37 more wanted
  • Mirwais to bowl his last 3-0-12-1 so far
  • SIX to Rahaman over long-off, sweet stroke, Bangladesh 88 for 5 with 22 balls left and 31 wanted
  • What a game!
  • FOUR to Rahaman who picks the slower one and slams it straight into the sightscreen, 93 for 5 with three overs to go and 26 runs wanted
  • Hamid Hassan back on for his third over
  • Bangladesh creeping up to 100
  • 20 wanted off 13 balls now
  • Bangladesh 100 for 5 at the end of the 18th over, 19 wanted. 12 balls left
  • No one knows which way it's going to go
  • Hamid will of course bowl the last over but who bowls the 19th?
  • Nabi's decided to stick with golden-arm Karim
  • BIG APPEAL for lbw, first ball, not out
  • Two off the second
  • SIX off the third, out of the ground, by Shabbir Rahaman. Cometh the hour, cometh the man
  • SIX off the fourth, sweet as a nut
  • Two off the next and just three wanted now
  • Seven balls to go
  • 1 run off the last and when everyone says one big over can change things that was the big over. 17 off it and just two runs wanted off the last
  • But it's Hamid and it's Afghanistan and they do not give up
  • Rahaman 33* on strike who may have just booked his World Cup place too, 1 off the first ball to tie the scores
  • BANGLADESH HAVE WON BY FIVE WICKETS with three balls to spare
    Theirs is the gold
  • Shabbir Rahaman, just 19, no one had heard of him before this tournament, not even Aminul Islam, made an incredible 33 off 18 deliveries with three of the sweetest 6s you could ever hope to see to win the game for Bangladesh just when Afghanistan looked like they'd be hanging the precious Asian Games gold medals around their necks
  • Post-match analysis: Even if it's Federer v Nadal, Barcelona v Real Madrid, someone's got to lose. Today it was Afghanistan that took silver, but only because Bangladesh had a golden two overs at the end. Both teams played very well, in a game that could have gone either way. A new star - Shabbir Rahaman - came through for Bangladesh to win it for his team.
  • Mohammad Nabi is as disappointed as I've seen any captain be after a loss, and his coach can feel Afghanistan should have a left-arm spinner, and maybe Nabi - along with Karim Sadiq - wishes that the 19th over which went for 17 runs was not given to an off-spinner but both of them have won in those situations before and should back themselves to do the same again.
  • Bangladesh just had a fearless teenager coming in at just the right time, "I had no pressure on me, I'm not a star," said Shabbir Rahaman afterwards, "Naeem Islam (the other batsman) told me I needed to hit two sixes and I did." So Bangladesh won. Afghanistan played very well, Bangladesh just beat them. They should play more often.
