Day 5: NEPAL MAKE SHORT WORK OF MALAYSIA TO SET UP FINAL SHOWDOWN WITH HONG KONG

Nepal and Hong Kong set up a final showdown in the Eastern Region qualifying tournament for the sole ticket to the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka with semi-final wins in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

Tournament favourites Nepal accounted for hosts Malaysia by seven wickets at the Kinrara Oval while Hong Kong saw off the challenge of Singapore by 51 runs (D/L method) at the Selangor Turf Club.

Malaysia were quick to fold after mustering 87 runs in 40.5 overs while Nepal needed just 15.5 overs to reach 90-3 and were not unduly worried despite being reduced to 30-3 after Haiqal Khair removed openers Pawan Sarraf and Rit Gautam.

Bhim Sharki and Rohit Kumar Paudel scored 33 and 31 runs respectively in an unbroken 60-run partnership to steer Nepal to their third win of the tournament.

"We did very well and everyone played their role," said Nepal captain Paudel. "Medium pacers bowled very well and we restricted them to below 100.

"We played a few rushed shots with our batting which is why we lost three wickets but Bhim and I played sensibly and we won the match. Overall we played well."

Nepal's win came before lunch was taken and was in keeping with their comfortable journey through the tournament so far which included group stage wins over Singapore and China.

"We've played well so far and tomorrow is the final, so let's try to win that now. Any team which reaches the final must be good so may the best team win."

The defeat marked a disappointing end for Malaysia following a chastening three-run loss to Hong Kong in their last Group B match which set up the semi-final meeting with Nepal. A third batting collapse in four matches left much to be desired from the home team.

Amir Azim Shukor topscored for Malaysia with 24 runs after featuring in a 37-run stand for the second wicket but his exit at 38-2 elicited a poor response from the rest of the batting order.

Sagar Dhakal captured three wickets for 16 off 10 overs to win match honours while Kushal Malla took two wickets.

In the other semi-final, Hong Kong piled 247 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 50 overs as Nasrulla Rana and Adit Gorawara hit half-centuries before Singapore reached 97-5 from 28.3 overs when rain stopped play.

Hong Kong recovered from 27-2 after Rana (55 from 28) and Gorawara (52 off 114) combined for a 55-run stand before Mehran added a useful 40 for an imposing total. Mohammad Hassan was the pick of the Hong Kong bowlers with 3-18 while Hari Kukreja ended on 43 not out.
