OMAN'S HEART BEATS HONG KONG

Oman

Oman claimed seventh place in the ACC U-19 Elite Cup with a hard-fought five wicket victory over Hong Kong at Club Aman.

It was obvious from the start, as Oman’s bowlers raced in all vim and vigour, that they were here for one reason only: to win. The question was, how much did Hong Kong really want to compete? The answer was, not so much. The talent’s there undoubtedly in Hong Kong. So is the technique. But maybe the heart, the hunger, the ‘mongrel’ isn’t.

Elbowed out of the way of victory by two terrier-like teams – Qatar and Malaysia – earlier in the competition, Hong Kong were not allowed a sniff of victory all day today. Oman’s opening pace bowlers made the breakthrough after which their spinners capitalized, the highest partnership being just 19 between James Atkinson and Nicky Lau who hung around for 98 balls for his 24.

Hong Kong’s captain Courtney Kruger

95 wasn’t really going to challenge Oman’s batting and an opening stand of 59 between Suneet Fernandes and Shrey Wilson pretty much sealed the deal. Zafaran Ali bowled well, as he has done all tournament as did the Bacon brothers but they just didn’t have enough runs to work with.

Hong Kong’s young cricketers may have reached a plateau from which further advance will be difficult without a team-wide change in attitude. Oman, maybe do not have Hong Kong’s ‘class’ but they have heart and fire and in the final equation that was enough.
