ACC U-19 Challenge Cup 2009 - China v Kuwait

They may have finished first and second in Group A of the ACC U-19 Challenge, but there was a world of difference between Kuwait and China as there was between China and Myanmar and Myanmar and Brunei. Kuwait finished undefeated in the group as China fell victim to Kuwait’s powerful bowling. Kuwait won by ten wickets for the second time at the Chiang Mai Gymkhana ground.

“China doesn’t have much of a cricketing culture as we all know but they beat Myanmar by 117 runs and Myanmar scored 302 against Brunei winning by 188 runs," said China's coach Rashid Khan. "This is a positive for Chinese cricket and if we want them to progress, we need to realize the positives as well as the negatives. We must definitely give credit to the Kuwaiti bowlers. They used the seam well and bowled superbly today”, added ACC Development Officer for China Aminul Islam.

Kuwait’s bowlers have been so good in all three games, their batsmen haven't had to break a sweat. Haroon Shahid had taken 5 for 4 in the game against Myanmar while captain Saad Khalid had 7 for 4 versus Brunei. This game was no different with Faisal Nadeem leading the way and the batsmen only having to score 41 to win.

Nadeem (6-16) took a wicket with his first ball, another two balls later and then had an induced edge dropped at slip.

Nadeem in action against China

China’s captain, ‘Big Man’ Zhang Yufei came in at 4 and tried to fight fire with fire. He made an emphatic 75 against Myanmar two days ago, but after one audacious boundary off Nadeem, he holed out to cover and the rest of China crumbled.

Nadeem said, “It was bad luck not winning the toss because we did want to bat but now that’s OK. My strategy was to bowl wicket to wicket as said by my coaches and the plan worked.”

“We need to be patient with China. Kuwait are a top cricketing side because their basics have all come from Pakistan and that is why they’re so strong. China are still at the learning stage and it will take some time before they can beat any big teams. They will learn from every game they play”, said Mr. Islam.

Kuwait closed out the game after 27 balls. “We are getting better with each match and at this stage we are ready to face any team”, said Kuwait’s coach Sameer Desai. Kuwait now plays Bahrain in the semi-finals while China take on hosts Thailand.
