DAY 2: AFGHANISTAN AND HONG KONG RUN RIOT

Afghanistan powered their way to a 10-wicket victory over Iran in the morning match at Mesaieed on Day 2 of the ACC U-16 Elite, victory set up by a piercing spell of pace-bowling by captain Yousef Khan Zazai. He took 6 for 9 bowling straight, full and fast, five of his victims either bowled or lbw. Iran were bundled out for 26 inside 15 overs, with extras top-scoring with 20. Afghanistan took 26 deliveries to knock off the necessary runs. In the afternoon match, Hong Kong beat Kuwait by 67 runs, the margin of victory not truly indicative of how competitive the match was for long periods.

Hong Kong were indebted to a captain's innings by Jhatavedh Subramanyam (79* off 92, with two 4s), the wiry young man playing straight initially before opening out towards the end of the Hong Kong innings. Hong Kong put on 55 in the last 34 balls of their innings, which took the game away from the doughty Kuwaitis. Kuwait at times bowled and fielded very well but couldn't maintain enough pressure on the Hong Kong batsmen. When they came to bat, opener Allen Thomas (43 off 55, two 4s) looked to be a fine player, timing the ball sweetly until a run out accounted for him with Kuwait on 65 in the 19th over. Hong Kong had to bowl and field well and were pushed hard for long parts of the game. It was good to see independent field placing, footwork from the batsmen and challenging bowling by Hong Kong. Mohammad Usman's figures were rather flattered by bowling at Kuwait's long and feathery tail but a hat-trick he did take and for that he was adjudged Man of the Match. Many of the players on both sides will go far.
