2006 ACC U-15 Cup (Elite Division) - BAHRAIN v KUWAIT

Kuwait and Bahrain enjoyed a real “ding-dong battle” in the words of one of the match officials. The two teams were quite evenly matched but it is Kuwait who would feel that they could have won had rain not cost them an hour or so of play over the two days.

Batting first, Kuwait’s most mature player captain Navtej Singh led from the front with a superb century and was ably supported by Haseeb ur Rahman (48). Runs came at a fair pace with David Mathias (4-63) and Divyesh Nambiar who bowled 8 overs for just 11 runs with one wicket, the pick of the bowlers.

Kuwait’s seamers Mohammed Qasim and Imran Idress then ran through the Bahrain batting, as they were all out for 97 in little more than two hours of batting. Following-on, Bahrain re-jigged their line-up, captain Mathias opening with Samuel Viegas and they made a much better fist of things second time around.

However, even with the top three making 163 runs between them Bahrain weren’t out of the woods. Navtej Singh and Nader Aziz spun Bahrain from 166 for 2 to 174 for 5 in just seven overs. With Bahrain thus at 24 for 5 effectively, a couple of hours of play remaining, Kuwait were definitely in the hunt for a win. Mathias was then caught behind for a doughty 84, and Bahrain were staring down the barrel.

The remaining batsmen held out however, not without a few alarms. By the time Bahrain had eaten up all of the clock they had a lead of 61.
