Day 1: MUSTAFA ROCKS AS UAE THRASHES IRAN

By Shahzad Raza

MUSCAT: Iran’s ambition to make an early impression on the eight-nation ACC Western Region T20I Tournament crashed into Rohan Mustafa’s explosive talent and fizzled out quickly as UAE cantered to a 10-wicket win here on OC Turf 2 in Amerat on Sunday.

Chasing Iran’s dismal 61, UAE took less than six overs to surpass the total, Mustafa leading the charge with a strokeful 41 not out. His brief stay on the crease saw him strike eight sweetly timed boundaries and a big six.

UAE can now expect a tougher test tomorrow against Kuwait which has a fair amount of international experience while Iran will get a chance to redeem itself against regional rival Saudi Arabia in its next game tomorrow morning.

Experiencing the blues of early days in international cricket, Iran found itself in hot waters immediately after being asked to bat first. The first eight overs set the tone for the game as UAE reduced Iran to 15 for 4, Mustafa accounting for the two of them in his four-over spell, conceding only six runs while bowling an astonishing 19 dot balls. Spinner Ahmed Raza bowled well too, taking 2 for 24.

The teams have been divided in two groups; Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Maldives are battling it out in Group A while UAE, Kuwait, Iran and Saudi Arabia take each other on in Group B. Top two from each group will contest the semifinals on February 26 with the winners reaching the final, scheduled to be held the next day.
