Group B: Afghanistan v Iran at Engineering College Ground

Afghanistan keen to secure the trifecta of victory, bonus point and massive net run-rate, achieved their aims with a massive 270 run victory against Iran.

At 6-2 however, in the second over, this trifecta did not look possible. Rabani and Ahamadi were both bowled going for the airiest of drives. The Afghan middle-order however revived their cause as they scored at close to 10 an over off the next thirty overs. Indeed had not wickets fallen, Afghanistan could well have posted 400 in their fifty overs. Their innings closed in the 39th over, their score 315.

The Afghan bowlers didn’t find it completely easy against Iran’s batsmen but once the second wicket partnership of 30 between Abdul and Baloch was breached, the remaining batsmen all fell in a heap. Sanaullah Moheb took 5 -17 bowling unchanged.

There are weaknesses to be exploited in the Afghan line-up by more capable competitors than Iran, but the Afghan guns have started to fire, and their winner take-all quarterfinal with the UAE should be an absolute cracker.
