Group D: Afghanistan v UAE at Birendra Sainik Maha Vidyalaya Ground

UAE turned in a thoroughly professional performance to beat Afghanistan by 7 wickets and qualify for the quarter-finals.

Winning the toss and batting first hoping to put up a big score, Afghanistan from the onset never managed to come to terms with left-armer Mohammed Fawad’s bowling. With his line and length, with just a hint of inswing, Fawad caused the Afghan batsmen considerable problems as they found themselves unable to play with any of their normal freedom.

They self-destructed swinging wildly, and had Fawad bowled his ten overs all the way through, UAE could have wrapped up the Afghan innings quite early. Afghanistan made 134 in the end, well below par but given their bowling resources they would have thought that victory was still possible.

UAE’s batsmen took no chances however, and playing sensibly, steadily accumulated runs from the start. Rameez Shehzad (30*) and Abdul Rahman (50*) batted well to snuff out Afghan hopes.
