Hong Kong v Qatar at Selangor Turf Club

Qatar advanced to the quarter-finals with a convincing win over a Hong Kong side that never quite did itself justice in the competition.

Batting first in hazy conditions, all but one of Qatar’s batsmen got off to decent starts and a score of 177 was a fair reflection of their resolute batting. Hong Kong were a little sloppy in the field but the concession of only five 4s in the whole innings was testimony to how hard Qatar had to work for their runs.

With bonus points a factor if Hong Kong were to qualify instead of Qatar for the quarter-finals, the target of 178 had to be scored within 36 overs.

Hong Kong went for it.

They were up with the rate until the 11th over, the only problem being that wickets were falling in the quest for quick runs. 53 for 2 became 65 for 6 in the space of just five overs and with it, all chance of victory, let alone one within 36 overs.

Qatar won quite comfortably in the end, by 34 runs.
