Playing in front of their warmly appreciative fans, Singapore won the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 6 by beating Bahrain in the Final by 68 runs at the Kallang.
“They were by far the best team in the tournament, with their skill, fitness and knowledge of match situations setting them apart,” says ACC Development Manager Bandula Warnapura who took in a number of the tournament’s matches. “A number of the teams suffered because of the age of the players and their fitness levels but overall the standard of play was good.”
Singapore have previously hosted ODIs and three-day matches amongst Asian Associates and an ACC Trophy in 2002 but this ICC event was the first time that resources on this scale have been used in Singapore, Singapore Cricket Association President and ICC Director Imran Khwaja said: “This week has been a superb one and I am ecstatic about Singapore’s promotion to Division 5.
“It has been absolutely marvellous to wear the hat of an ICC Director and host the tournament here. I think there are many Associate Members like us who have the capability and the potential to host such ICC events and I hope we’ll see more events like this in future.”
Six Asian umpires featured in the event too, with Sarika Prasad and Buddhi Pradhan officiating in the Final, with Simon Taufel as the 3rd Umpire. “Singapore also did well in terms of the grounds and wickets too, the wickets were good for cricket; only the Indian Association Ground was less than full-international size,” said Mr. Warnapura.
In the lunch interval the next generation of Singaporean youngsters took the field for some KwikCricket while ICC Centenary Volunteer medals were presented on the boundary’s edge to those who have done so much for Singapore cricket over the years: Messrs Anil Kalaver, Subramaniam, Harbans Singh, Joe Grimberg and Chris Pianca. And as the match went in the afternoon, the nets were filled with their regular women’s squad training.

Elsewhere in Singapore on the same day, Guernsey pipped Malaysia by 2 runs in the 3rd/4th Place Playoff and Botswana beat Norway in the 5th and 6th Place Playoff. Singapore and Bahrain now move forward to WCL Division 5 in Nepal next February where they will join the hosts, Fiji, Jersey and the USA.
