ACC SCHOLARSHIPS CONTINUE FOR UMPIRES AND ANALYSTS

The ACC Scholarship program which, in recent years has seen curators from Myanmar and Thailand further their learning in Sri Lanka, and then last year had the most prominent women cricketers from the ACC region take part in Sri Lankan women’s league cricket, is now extending to umpires and video analysts. Durga Nath Subedi and Raman Shiwakoti from Nepal, and Tabarak Dar from Hong Kong are among the four who will be in Sri Lanka in November along with their countries’ touring teams.

Umpires Durga Nath Subedi of Nepal (who has umpired several ACC and ICC tournaments including the forthcoming Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 3) and Tabarak Dar of Hong Kong (former captain and coach) will be officiating at each of their countries’ three-day matches at Kurenagala and Dambulla with the Sri Lanka Cricket XIs. Development Manager Bandula Warnapura says that “from the start of my time at the ACC I have been keen to send curators, based on their performance, on the recommendation of the Development Officers and the controlling bodies, to Test-playing countries. There they can learn the preparation of pitches for Test matches and ODIs. It should be the same for the coaches: local coaches who perform and do well will be sent to the Test nations to work with the academy coaches, for about three weeks. This could be considered an incentive for their hard work. This will also encourage others to perform well.”

Video analysts have an important part to play in coaching and player development too and success is not reliant on software so much as application. There is a possibility that the three-day matches could be classified as first-class (the ACC is still awaiting confirmation from the ICC) which will mean almost all the players will be making their first-class debuts during the tour. During the Twenty20 Internationals Messrs. Subedi and Dar will be shadowing the ICC match officials. ACC Umpiring Resource Person Bomi Jamula thinks “this is an excellent initiative and will give our umpires an excellent experience.” The two Nepal and Hong Kong umpires will stand in the 50-over match between the two sides at Kurunegala on November 24.
