AFGHANISTAN CONQUERS ENGLAND

At Lord’s, June 2006

The Afghan national team have completed their seven-match tour of England, winning all but one of their matches.

Playing strong opposition throughout, including three county 2nd XIs, Afghanistan fought hard to win all but one of their matches. Their one loss came against a Loughborough University Cricketing Centre of Excellence side by just one wicket.

Raees Ahmadzai

“As a warm-up to the ACC Trophy in September the tour is very good,” said Taj Malik, Afghanistan National Coach. As ever, Taj Malik talked a good game: "We have the fastest bowlers in the world. They bowl at 90mph and have adjusted very strongly to the conditions in England. This is the first step for us on the way to the 2011 World Cup."

“The tour was a great learning experience for us,” said Afghanistan’s captain Raees Ahmadzai. “We were given great hospitality by the English people and we look forward to welcoming them to Afghanistan soon,” he said. “Our country can tour more certainly and we would like the chance to play countries like Bermuda, Holland and Canada.” Throughout the tour the Afghans were strongly supported by neutrals and their compatriots.

Hamid Hassan and Mohammad Nabi at The Nursery End, Lord’s

Two of the squad, hard-hitting Mohammad Nabi (2 hundreds and 1 fifty) and fast-bowler Hamid Hassan, now start a four-week stint with the MCC Young Cricketers which should be a tremendous learning experience. MCC President Robin Marlar speaking to the ACC Chief Executive Syed Ashraful Huq recently, said, “The way Afghanistan play is really quite thrilling and we’re delighted to see the role cricket has played in the rebirth of a country.”
