2006 ACC U-15 Cup (Elite Division)

MALAYSIA v U.A.E.

To be able to reach the finals of a tournament is a rewarding feeling. But to reach a final on one’s home turf makes it all the more satisfying. This is what Malaysia was aiming at.

UAE were put in to bat first and none of the batsmen were able to get going, until Vignesh Rajan stepped in. Batting for nearly 37 overs, he kept his cool and stayed at the crease to reach 50* in the last over as UAE finished on 132 for 9. The spin of Abilash Sugunan never fails to impress and he took 3-34.

The Malaysian batsmen never really looked comfortable. Only the highly promising Keithan Goonasagaran (33) put up any kind of score, the rest falling easily. UAE’s Vignesh Rajan bowled impressively with figures of 3-14 in 17 overs. Malaysia were all out for 125 in 55.3 overs.

A brilliant innings comes to a close

Manish Kishore’s 58 for the UAE helped his team reach 132 after 67.2 overs of quite grim batting as, with a bonus point’s advantage after the first-innings, they sought not to lose the match under any circumstances. That left the Malaysians to chase 151 in just 15 overs.

The task looked virtually impossible but Malaysia’s batsmen did try pinch-hitting. Opener Syazrul Ezat (33) played some brilliant cover drives but was bowled with the score at 57. Rain interrupted play and for close to 20 minutes the Malaysians sat and watched the game slip through their fingers.

Malaysia eventually succumbed to a score of 75 for 5 in 12 overs as play ended due to bad light.

Although the match was drawn, UAE progressed to the finals due to the points system and will now face Nepal in the Final at Kinrara.
