Player of the Tournament, Yoosuf Azyan

Maldives’s School Cricket League continued this year with a seven-team competition. Played over 20 overs a side, the ten-day U15 event had several competitive matches with a fair amount of talent on display. “These boys will form the basis of next year’s U-16 squad for ACC competition and it looks like there’s enough raw material to turn into good cricketers,” says ACC Development Officer for Maldives Rumesh Ratnayake.

Local coaches and elite players managed the event and the final of the Philips School Cricket League was played between the two unbeaten sides of the tournament, Iskander and Muhiyddin. There were eight 50s and one 100 (by Nazuwan of Kallafaanu School) in the tournament. National coach Nilantha Cooray was on hand to assess the cricketers and said that “it’s very important that they keep playing regular cricket and concentrate more on their fielding and fitness. Except Muhiyiddin all other teams are very unfit.” Muhiyiddin’s batting let them down however and Iskander, coached by national player Shafraz Jaleel, were the eventual victors, winning by 61 runs after posting 137.
