SINGAPORE BULLISH BEFORE DIVISION 6 EVENT

The 2008 Senior Team

Singapore are doing everything they possibly can to prepare for Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 6 feeling that even though they are good enough to play at higher Divisions they first have to do well at home, in this event. A top-two finish in the tournament will take Singapore back up to Division 5 where they were last year, and where they in fact beat eventual Division winners Afghanistan. Afghanistan eventually proceeding all the way to the ICC World Cup Qualifier.

Singapore won five out of six games in last year’s Division 5 yet finished fifth out of twelve teams. “We were unfortunate with a number of factors last year,” said Singapore Cricket Association President Khwaja Imran, “yet we had the talent and ability to beat Afghanistan who went on to go all the way up to the World Cup Qualifier.” Division 6 is the first time a World Cricket League event is being held in Asia.

Former Australian international Trevor Chappell is coaching Singapore for Division 6, which Singapore are hosting from August 29 to September 5 this year. His assignment started on July 24. Mr. Chappell was fielding coach for Sri Lanka in 1999 and coached Bangladesh from 2001 to 2002. “He came highly recommended, “says Mr. Imran. After his first look at the Singapore squad during a four-hour session at the Kallang Mr. Chappell said, “There is plenty to be happy about. There is plenty of talent. Obviously, there are areas we can improve."
