Former Sri Lankan captain, national team manager, and Sri Lanka Cricket CEO and Chairman of Selectors Duleep Mendis is among the three names that have been shortlisted by Oman Cricket to coach the national team ahead of the ACC Trophy Elite in the UAE in October. Former Pakistan international Asif Mujtaba and former Sri Lankan first-class cricketer Lantra Fernando are also on the shortlist.

ACC Development Officer for Oman Iqbal Sikander is handling negotiations between Oman Cricket and the three candidates. The position will be just for the Trophy Elite event. As Oman Cricket General Secretary Mr. Madhu Jesrani says, ''We can't afford a full-time coach. The OC is not in a position to pay for a full-time coach. I agree that it is a big disadvantage for the national team, but we don't have a choice at the moment.” Lantra Fernando is currently coaching Bhutan in preparation for Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 8 in Samoa in September, while Messrs. Mujtaba and Mendis are between assignments.
